An epic novel of a great house and the love that consumed it...

Judith Lennox's The Secret Years is a moving story about life in the East Anglian Fens after the First World War. Perfect for fans of Rachel Hore and Kate Morton.

During the golden summer of 1914, four young people played in the gardens of Drakesden Abbey. Nicholas and Lally were the children of the great house, set in the bleak and magical Fen country; Thomasine was the unconventional niece of two genteel maiden aunts in the village; Daniel was the son of the local blacksmith, a fiercely independent, ambitious boy who longed to break away from the stifling confines of his East Anglian upbringing. As the drums of war sounded in the distance, the Firedrake, a mysterious and ancient Blythe family heirloom disappeared, setting off an uncontrollable chain of events.

The Great War changed everything, and both Nicholas and Daniel returned from the front damaged by their experiences. Thomasine, freed from the narrow disciplines of her childhood, and enjoying the new hedonism which the twenties brought, thought that she could escape from the ties that bound her to both Nicholas and Daniel. But the passions and enmities of their youth had intensified in the passing years, and the four friends had to experience tragedy and betrayal before the Firedrake made its reappearance and, with it, a new hope for the future.

Enjoyed this novel!!! I have read several of Lennox's books and have found them all interesting. She certainly gets the WW One and after era in Britain. It helps to understand the rise of socialism during that time in England. This book also shows lots of negative aspects of the "Upper Classes" and is focused more on the destruction of one family. Highly recommended. If you enjoy historical fiction or non-fiction during WW One and Two, here are some authors to check out: Margaret Mayhew, Melynda Jarrett, William Jarvis, Duncan Barrett, Irene Hope Hedick, Soraya Lane, Eileen Townsend, Pamela Winfield, Iris Jones Simantel, and Anne DeCouruy.

Absolutely captivating.... i could not put the book down! I had not read Judith Lennox before and am now reading all her nany novels.
Judith Lennox is one of my very favorite authors. In this novel, you are taken to before and after World War 1, with the aristocratic Blythe family who live in the Fens and control the town. The two younger Blythe's Nicolas and Lally engage in adventures with the poor two of the lower class village children while their mom is away. Thomasine who is being raised by two maiden aunts and Daniel who is the son of the local blacksmith who abuses his son and family. Daniel is a very smart young man with a scholarship until he is found in the garden shed being kissed by Lally. This sets the novel into action. Daniel isn't able to attend school because the dowager ensure that he isn't able to afford uniforms so he leaves town and joins the war. Nicolas isn't allowed to enjoy further adventures with Thomasine. The oldest Blythe dies in the war and Nicolas returns from the war damaged but runs into Thomasine in Paris while she is dancing. Thomasine has just found out that she was pregnant by a cad who decided to skip town. Nicolas is besotted with Thomasine and convinces her to marry him and she feels this is her only way out and decides to pass off her unborn child as a Blythe. On their honeymoon she miscarries. Life back at Drakesden isn't a picnic, Nicolas is damaged by the war, jealous of Daniel and controlled by his mother and sister. Thomasine eventually is given the opportunity to help out despite being hated by the dowager and improvements begin. Their son, William is born and expected to follow in Nicolas's footsteps by being sent off to school at age six. Without giving away the full story, Thomasine leaves and goes to London with her son, William only to lose him. Wonderful story with lots of twists and turns.
