Questions of the Spirit The Quest for Understanding at a Time of Loss edition by Brent Green SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
This is one of the most introspective books on death and dying that I have ever read. The questions he raises are deeply insightful as to who we are and what we value. I found myself moved to tears several times as I read of Brent's own journey with the loss of his sister and reminded of my own. His questions about suffering are thought provoking and should be included in grief support groups. The questions of forgiveness should remind us all to work through unfinished business with loved ones or other acquaintances before it's too late. Someone once said "If you knew you were going to die tomorrow who would you call and what's stopping you from doing that now?" The questions of first losses reminded me of the deaths of my grandparents and my own father at a young age. this would be a great book selection for a book club because it's best shared in discussion. Barring that though, it's easy to discuss this book with yourself. I highly recommend it to all that are thoughtful and brave enough to look at old scars.
Brent Green's Questions of the Spirit explores loss of all types, triggered by the loss of loved ones. A thoughtful and well crafted book, you'll explore what living, dying, and death mean to you and your loved ones who remain behind. Beautifully wordsmithed by a masterful writer, Brent shares his personal journey of exploration, understanding, and resolution. This work makes you ponder and realize new insights about your relationship to life, living, and passing on. Some will find it therapeutic, others cathartic, and still others comforting.
This book will be on the New York Times best seller one day and probably used not only in classrooms but by people who have endured loss and are undergoing grief. It would also be a perfect pick for Oprah Winfrey's book club. It reads very easily and the reader will find themselves thinking, this book is asking the deep, existential questions which are really my own questions which I wonder about from time to time." While it is written in a voice which is accessible to laypersons, and engages readers in uncomfortable subjects like death and dying, the place of suffering in life and how we process grief, it is even better for professionals who work with those who are grieving. . It is a must reading for caring professionals, Psychologists, Grief Counselors, Clergy, and Hospice workers. This book fits easily within popular books like "Good Grief" by Westberg, or "On Death and Dying" by Kubler Ross, or "When Bad Things Happen to Good Peopl"e by Kushner. This is the absolute best book I have read in the last year
Brent Green has written a courageous book that is a combination of an intimate autobiographical disclosure and a far-reaching inquiry into the problems of death and loss. In a wide-ranging narrative, he reveals sensitive personal experiences that marked the stages of his own struggles to come to terms with the losses of most of his close family relations and a number of other people with whom he has developed close bonds during his lifetime. The book provokes readers into a confrontation with issues that most of us prefer to delay facing as long as possible until they inevitably get too close to ignore any longer. And there is some value to thinking about such matters before you are forced to, so you have the luxury of thinking things through without the pressure often faced in the event of the loss of a loved one. Brent's personal stories of loss can be quite painful to read, and must have been much more painful to write. But by sharing them he gives readers the opportunity to share some of the insights he gained through his processing of his own painful experiences.
The book is presented almost like a workbook for learning how to cope with the problems that all human beings must inevitably face at some points during their lives. He poses questions at the end of each chapter to encourage further inquiry into the reader's own experiences and feelings. His experience and training as a therapist and his undergraduate study of philosophy show through in his blending of reportage, personal confession, speculation and counsel.
The inquiry spins off from the question, "Is there value in suffering?" It's a tough question to face. We all probably like the idea of being wise, but are not too eager to experience the suffering that is an inevitable part of becoming wise. Brent Green generously shares his own experiences of loss to help guide his readers through those kinds of events that are so frightening to contemplate that they become unthinkable, and therefore we don't think of them. And then when we are confronted with a serious loss, we have often never seriously considered such a thing and are unprepared. Mr. Green is here to help assure us that we will not be caught unawares.
As to the question, "Is there value in suffering?" I would say that this book establishes that there is, indeed. Thank you, Brent Green, for gently sharing your insights.
